Scriptures: 以 賽 亞 書Isaiah 60: 1-6

1 “Arise, shine, for your light has come,

and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.

2 See, darkness covers the earth

and thick darkness is over the peoples,

but the LORD rises upon you

and his glory appears over you.

3 Nations will come to your light,

and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

4 “Lift up your eyes and look about you: 


All assemble and come to you; 
your sons come from afar, 


and your daughters are carried on the hip. 


5 Then you will look and be radiant, 


your heart will throb and swell with joy; 


the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, 


to you the riches of the nations will come. 


6 Herds of camels will cover your land, 


young camels of Midian and Ephah. 


And all from Sheba will come, 


bearing gold and incense 


and proclaiming the praise of the LORD.

¹ 興 起 ， 發 光 ！ 因 為 你 的 光 已 經 來 到 ！ 耶 和 華 的 榮 耀 發 現 照 耀 你 。

² 看 哪 ， 黑 暗 遮 蓋 大 地 ， 幽 暗 遮 蓋 萬 民 ， 耶 和 華 卻 要 顯 現 照 耀 你 ； 他 的 榮 耀 要 現 在 你 身 上 。

³ 萬 國 要 來 就 你 的 光 ， 君 王 要 來 就 你 發 現 的 光 輝 。

⁴ 你 舉 目 向 四 方 觀 看 ； 眾 人 都 聚 集 來 到 你 這 裡 。 你 的 眾 子 從 遠 方 而 來 ； 你 的 眾 女 也 被 懷 抱 而 來 。

⁵ 那 時 ， 你 看 見 就 有 光 榮 ； 你 心 又 跳 動 又 寬 暢 ； 因 為 大 海 豐 盛 的 貨 物 必 轉 來 歸 你 ； 列 國 的 財 寶 也 必 來 歸 你 。

⁶ 成 群 的 駱 駝 ， 並 米 甸 和 以 法 的 獨 峰 駝 必 遮 滿 你 ； 示 巴 的 眾 人 都 必 來 到 ； 要 奉 上 黃 金 乳 香 ， 又 要 傳 說 耶 和 華 的 讚 美 。

Sermon Outline:

The beginning of a New Year is a time of reflection, of looking back and looking forward. It is a strange time of mixture between the disappointment over the reality and a sense of hope over the future. In this time, we are also called to “lift up your eyes and look about you” (Isaiah 60: 4), to look up at the light of Christ, shining brightly above the darkness. It is this light of Christ that ultimately gives hope – hope for a brighter future for all.

新一年的開始,是反省,回顧與前瞻的時間.這段時間混雜著既對現況感到失望又對未來懷抱著希望的情緒. 此時,我們也被召喚要「你 舉 目 向 四 方 觀 看」(以賽亞書60:4), 仰望基督的光照亮黑暗, 這個光是基督的光,到最後給予人們希望—給眾人一個美好未來的盼望.

1. Naïve optimism in the 1910 World Missionary Conference at Edinburgh (愛丁堡世界宣教會議)

1910年愛丁堡世界宣教會議不切實際的樂觀

• Protestant ecumenical movement with the goal of "the evangelization of the world in this generation."
• 改革宗跨教派運動所定的目標「在我們這一代把福音傳遍全世界」
• In Canada, there was a call to “Christianization of Our Civilization” (by J.A. Macdonald)
• 在加拿大, J.A. Macdonald呼籲著「我們的社會基督化」

• integrating of new comers in Christian ethos based on two Christ-like principles: love and service
• 根據效法基督的兩個原則—愛與服事,融合新來的人
• if 4,000 people were transformed and take the two principles into their work place, Canada destined to be the new heaven and new earth
• 假設有四千個人得到改變,並且把這兩個原則帶到他們上班的地方,加拿大必定會成為新天新地
• disappointment over the reality – Canada instead became more secular
• 令人失望的現況—相反的,加拿大卻變得更世俗化

2. The call of Isaiah to look upon the bright light

以賽亞呼籲仰望大光

• The people of Judah were also disappointed over the rebuilt Jerusalem after the return from exile
• 猶大的百姓從被擄之地返回,對重建後的耶路撒冷感到失望
• The vision of Isaiah paved the way for a renewed optimism, not based on what people could do, but based on what God was doing

• “See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you.” (v.2)

• 新一代的宣教士來到北美洲,歐洲,使大公教會更充實起來
• the light of Christ still shines in unlikely places
• 基督的榮光依然在不起眼的地方照耀著

4. Challenges for us at TRC

對我們TRC教會的挑戰

• thinking small instead of thinking big - seeing the light, and catching fire one individual at a time

• build Christ-like families based on the two Christ-like principles: love and service
• 根據效法基督的兩個則—愛與服事--建立基督化的家庭
• 2011 TRC theme – “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15)

• continue to hope for the glorious future where all people will flock to Zion, the mountain of God, to proclaim the praise of the LORD.
