Sermon Title: What Does It Mean?

Scriptures: Acts (使徒行傳) 2: 1-13, 36-37

1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" 13Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."

36"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." 37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"

Sermon Outline:

  • The two Pentecostal questions of “what does it mean?” and “what should we do?” were asked by those who would later become the first Christian church. Often in churches, we ask the second questions, but we don’t spend nearly enough time to ask the first.

  • Pentecost (五旬節) was originally an agricultural festival celebrating the abundance of harvest, very similar to the Thanksgiving or the Moon Festival (中秋節) in our time. It also coincided with the Jewish festival of Shavuot that is 50 days after the Passover (逾越節).

  • Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Torah to Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai. As the Scripture describes, “God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven” were gathering in Jerusalem (Acts 2:5).

  • The disciples of Jesus were also gathering in Jerusalem, waiting in obedience to the departing instruction of their Lord. Waiting for the power of the Holy Spirit; waiting also for Jesus to come back.

  • The Holy Spirit came and empowered them to speak tongues, in languages of different nations, to all the people Jews and Gentiles who were gathered in that place.

  • Some doubted and laughed at the disciples, saying, “They have had too much new wine.” (v.13) But others, those who did not take the power of the Holy Spirit lightly, asked “what does it mean?”

  • It is a question that we need to ask ourselves as we are gathered here, in this place, in this time.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What does it mean for us to be a church called and empowered by the Holy Spirit?

  1. When do you sense the presence of God in this community of faith?

  1. To where do you think God is leading us?
