Scripture: Luke 5: 1-11
1One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, 2he saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch." 5Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets."
6When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" 9For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men." 11So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
Sermon Outline:
- The Lake of Gennesaret is another name for the Sea of Galilee. This story took place in a familiar setting where Jesus often taught and preached.
- The image of the crowd pressing around Jesus suggests the people leaning forward to catch his every word. The image of a full catch of fish (so full that the net began to break) demonstrates the divine power of Jesus
- Jesus linked these two images together with a metaphor and a command to Peter, “from now on you will catch man”
- The power of this metaphor is magnified in the minds of the original hearers, as many of the disciples of Jesus and much of the crowd earned their living through fishing – a power that is somewhat lost in our time.
- Seeing is believing – we need to ‘see’ in our minds what it means to catch people in our present context, in order to believe and to make it a reality.
- The Scripture story offers some clues as guidelines to catch people:
- We don’t do it alone: The verb to ‘let down’ (v.4) is plural, so this is a command to all in the boat, not just to Peter.
- We go far and deep: Jesus commanded Peter to ‘put out into deep water’ (v.4) – we won’t catch people by sitting around the same spot.
- We acknowledge our own failure: Peter also clearly acknowledged his status as a ‘sinful man’, and he asked Jesus to ‘go away’ from him. He was fearful that his sinfulness might lead to judgment, but Jesus would show him otherwise.
- We acknowledge God’s power at work: “Master” is a term of respect for a person of high status. “Lord” is a term by which Peter acknowledges God’s presence in the work of Jesus.
- Jesus invited Peter to go and catch people, just as Jesus invites all of us to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).
Questions for Reflection:
- What other metaphor can we use in today’s context to better describe ‘catching people as fish’?
2. Could you imagine or see a massive people crowding into our sanctuary,
hungering for the words of God? Why or why not?
3. What does it mean to follow Jesus and fish for people today – as an individual and as a church?
