Sweet and Sour Motherhood 母親的甘苦談
Scripture: Matthew馬太福音12: 46-50
46While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you."
48He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" 49Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. 50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."
46 耶 穌 還 對 眾 人 說 話 的 時 候 , 不 料 他 母 親 和 他 弟 兄 站 在 外 邊 , 要 與 他 說 話 。 47 有 人 告 訴 他 說 : 看 哪 , 你 母 親 和 你 弟 兄 站 在 外 邊 , 要 與 你 說 話 。 48 他 卻 回 答 那 人 說 : 誰 是 我 的 母 親 ? 誰 是 我 的 弟 兄 ?

- Motherhood is the most difficult job in today’s world – she spends 50% of her energy on her job, 50% on her husband, 50% on her children, and none for herself.

- Starting from Genesis, the experience of motherhood in the Old Testament is both sour and sweet. (Genesis 3:16, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing)

- For a woman the greatest blessing was to have a child, and the greatest curse was to be barren. For example – Hannah the mother of Samuel.

- In the New Testament, mothers are seen as nurturers in faith. For example - Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist (Luke 1:13), and Timothy’s mother Eunice and grandmother Lois (2 Timothy 1:5)

- Mary, the mother of Jesus, has set the best example of an ideal sweet-sour motherhood. She nurtured Jesus through early childhood and accompanied him at the start of his ministry.

- When Jesus announced that the mother or brother was not flesh and blood but a part of the family of faith, Mary appeared to have accepted this new relationship, continuing as his disciple until she stood at the foot of the cross.
