Come, Listen, See, Seek -- 來,聽,看,求

Scripture: Isaiah 55: 1-8


1 "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money,

come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of
fare.3 Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live. I will make an
everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.4 See, I have made
him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander of the peoples.5 Surely you will
summon nations you know not, and nations that do not know you will hasten to you,
because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has endowed you with
splendor."6 Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.

7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the
LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the
LORD.

Sermon Outline: 講道大綱


Both the Season of Lent and book of Isaiah are about journey. Both journeys rely on radical trust in God. Both journeys anticipate a “new thing” to be done by God that will bring deliverance.

四旬節和以賽亞書都是關於旅程。這兩個旅程基本建立在對上帝的信任。這兩個旅程都期待上帝成就了“新事”,帶來釋放。

The opening verses of Isaiah 55:1-8 bear strong resemblance to Wisdom’s invitation to feast at her table in Proverbs 9. The wisdom tradition in Judaism focuses on new ways to live.

以賽亞書 55:1-8開頭經節就帶著非常相似箴言第9章擺設宴席關於智慧的邀請。猶太教的傳統智慧著重在生活的新途徑。

We live in a world full of cynicism; we are naturally skeptical of anything that is offered to us free. We want to earn everything that is good for us, but we cannot earn God’s grace.

我們生活在一個充滿了憤世嫉俗的世界,我們自然地對任何免費提供給我們的事產生懷疑。我們想贏得一切對我們有益的,但我們不能贏得上帝的恩典。

Three characters of God: 1) God is generous and gracious, 2) God is near and does not hide from us, and 3) God remains mysterious.

The expectation of our response in faith to such invitation are revealed in the imperative verbs (祈使語氣動詞) of this text: Come. Listen. See. Seek.

在這段經文裏用的祈使語氣動詞:來、聽、看、求,所揭露的是期待我們回應信仰的邀請。

The invitation to table, to journey, and to trust places God right at the centre. This invitation by God is offered freely. Come, come, come!

邀請到宴席,到旅程,到以神掌權的地方。這是上帝的邀請,白白得到。來,來,來!
