Preparing the Field for Rain

Scriptures: Acts

1In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word."

5This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

7So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

Sermon Outline:

  • Growth is biblical. God wants His church to grow. The Jerusalem church exploded with the arrival of the Holy Spirit, and it continued to grow rapidly as the words of God spread.

  • The nature of such growth is both in number and in faith. We could see this in Acts 6:7, “the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and large number of priests became obedient to the faith”
  • However, for such growth to happen, the existing leaders in church need to nurture and prepare the people of God for service in the kingdom of God – just like a farmer need to prepare the field for the coming of rain.
  • The distinction between ‘wait on tables’ and ‘ministry of word’ is not the case of worldly vs. spiritual. Fellowship over the table was an integral part of the early church, just as important as prayer and preaching the words of God.
  • The decision to raise and induct a new generation of leaders – ‘seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom’ (v.3) – was an acknowledgment that existing leaders cannot do everything.
  • How the church leaders go about training and raising new generation of leaders has a direct relevance to how the word of God spread.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What are some of the often-raised concerns about integrating new believers, or new leaders to our church?

  1. What does the action of the Apostles teach us about raising a new generation of leaders in church?

  1. Who among us has the potential to become leaders in church that we should be intentional in preparing and nurturing them?
