Get Up! Walk! 行走!

Sermon Title: Get Up! Walk! 行走!

Scriptures: Acts

1One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!" 5So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

6Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." 7Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. 8He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Sermon Outline:

Church family is more than a shared DNA, it is a shared story.” (by Stephen Farris, principle of Vancouver School of Theology)

The stories of the Presbyterian Church in Canada (PCC) are incredibly rich and diverse. These stories portrait a church that is constantly renewing itself as it seeks to become more Christ like.

The theme of the 136 General Assembly is ‘generosity and’ ‘Sailing into the Future’. As Herbert Gale, the newly elected moderator of the assembly, explains, “We are building the future of our church based on the generosity of those in the past.”

We heard the story of Arlene (Rnadall) Onuoha who was a missionary to Nigeria for over thirty years, who has now returned to Canada, still working as a missionary bringing the good news of Christ to the people here.

We heard the story of Emmanuel Ariel, a minister in central India, who was jailed for his faith, and persevered because of support and prayer from Christians across the world.

We heard the story of Terry Leblanc (recipient of the E.H. Johnson Award), who is working to construct an aboriginal theology with stories of faith from the native communities. Example. God as a series of ever rising hills.

We struggled over the declining membership of PCC and its impact to all areas of ministries in the church. We struggled over how to be a better steward of our time and our money that God has given to us. We struggled whether PCC should plan to become a much smaller church, or to plan for a bold vision of growth.

A church focused on survival is just like the cripple man sitting beside the temple gate, begging for money (Acts 3:2). But God has given generously to PCC, and God continues to give generously. Just as Peter and John commanded the cripple man to get up and walk, God is commanding our church to do the same.
