6:8-15

8Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. 9Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)—Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen, 10but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke. 11Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, "We have heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God." 12So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin. 13They produced false witnesses, who testified, "This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law. 14For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us." 15All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

7:1-2a, 51-60

1Then the high priest asked him, "Are these charges true?" 2To this he replied: "Brothers and fathers, listen to me!

51"You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— 53you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it." 54When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56"Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." 57At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.

59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep. And Saul was there, giving approval to his death.

6:8-15

⁸ 司 提 反 滿 得 恩 惠 、 能 力 ， 在 民 間 行 了 大 奇 事 和 神 蹟 。 ⁹ 當 時 有 稱 利 百 地 拿 會 堂 的 幾 個 人 ， 並 有 古 利 奈 、 亞 力 山 太 、 基 利 家 、 亞 西 亞 、 各 處 會 堂 的 幾 個 人 ， 都 起 來 和 司 提 反 辯 論 。 ¹⁰ 司 提 反 是 以 智 慧 和 聖 靈 說 話 ， 眾 人 敵 擋 不 住 ， ¹¹ 就 買 出 人 來 說 ： 我 們 聽 見 他 說 謗 讟 摩 西 和 神 的 話 。 ¹² 他 們 又 聳 動 了 百 姓 、 長 老 ， 並 文 士 ， 就 忽 然 來 捉 拿 他 ， 把 他 帶 到 公 會 去 ， ¹³ 設 下 假 見 證 ， 說 ： 這 個 人 說 話 ， 不 住 的 蹧 踐 聖 所 和 律 法 。 14 我 們 曾 聽 見 他 說 ： 這 拿 撒 勒 人 耶 穌 要 毀 壞 此 地 ， 也 要 改 變 摩 西 所 交 給 我 們 的 規 條 。 15 在 公 會 裡 坐 著 的 人 都 定 睛 看 他 ， 見 他 的 面 貌 ， 好 像 天 使 的 面 貌 。

7:1-2a, 51-60

¹ 大 祭 司 就 說 ： 這 些 事 果 然 有 麼 ？ ² 司 提 反 說 ： 諸 位 父 兄 請 聽 ！ … ⁵¹ 你 們 這 硬 著 頸 項 、 心 與 耳 未 受 割 禮 的 人 ， 常 時 抗 拒 聖 靈 ！ 你 們 的 祖 宗 怎 樣 ， 你 們 也 怎 樣 。 ⁵² 那 一 個 先 知 不 是 你 們 祖 宗 逼 迫 呢 ？ 他 們 也 把 預 先 傳 說 那 義 者 要 來 的 人 殺 了 ； 如 今 你 們 又 把 那 義 者 賣 了 ， 殺 了 。 ⁵³ 你 們 受 了 天 使 所 傳 的 律 法 ， 竟 不 遵 守 。 ⁵⁴ 眾 人 聽 見 這 話 就 極 其 惱 怒 ， 向 司 提 反 咬 牙 切 齒 。 ⁵⁵ 但 司 提 反 被 聖 靈 充 滿 ， 定 睛 望 天 ， 看 見 神 的 榮 耀 ， 又 看 見 耶 穌 站 在 神 的 右 邊 ，
⁵⁶ 就 說 ： 我 看 見 天 開 了 ， 人 子 站 在 神 的 右 邊 。 ⁵⁷ 眾 人 大 聲 喊 叫 ， 摀 著 耳 朵 ， 齊 心 擁 上 前 去 ， ⁵⁸ 把 他 推 到 城 外 ， 用 石 頭 打 他 。 作 見 證 的 人 把 衣 裳 放 在 一 個 少 年 人 名 叫 掃 羅 的 腳 前 。⁵⁹ 他 們 正 用 石 頭 打 的 時 候 ， 司 提 反 呼 籲 主 說 ： 求 主 耶 穌 接 收 我 的 靈 魂 ！ ⁶⁰ 又 跪 下 大 聲 喊 著 說 ： 主 阿 ， 不 要 將 這 罪 歸 於 他 們 ！ 說 了 這 話 ， 就 睡 了 。 掃 羅 也 喜 悅 他 被 害 。

Sermon Outline:

• Faith requires commitment. Stephen is the first recorded Christian martyr in history who was killed because of his commitment to his faith.
• 信仰需要決志決心. 在基督徒殉道史上所紀錄的第一個人司提反, 就是因 他在信仰上的決志殉道.
• At first glance, there is nothing redeeming about the death of Stephen. God did not intervene to save him (as God did for the Apostles earlier), and no one became Christians due to this death. Furthermore, persecution broke out against the church, and the disciples were scattered.
• 乍看之下,司提反的死沒有什麼可取之處. 神並沒有 插手救他 ( 如同神對待之前的使徒一樣), 也無一人因他的殉道而成為基督徒. 再者,迫害教會 的事因此展開,信徒們也瓦解四散.
• Would history judge Stephen as simply an eager and overzealous young deacon who unwisely confronted an increasingly hostile Jewish religious authority, that eventually led to the destruction of the Jerusalem church?

• Everything is in God’s hand.

• Stephen was the messenger of God (having the ‘face of an angle’ v.15) who preached the same message as Christ – people will one day worship God in spirit and in truth, rather than in the confinement of the Jerusalem temple.

• The scattering of the Jerusalem church brought the gospel to much wider corners of the world. Faith in God spread even in hardship and persecution.

• The message of Stephen and the manner in which he faced persecution had deeply affected Paul’s mission later on. Everything is in God’s hand.

• Stephen accepted his death the same way as Jesus did – with peace and compassion. He prayed to God to forgive those who were stoning him (v.60). This peace of Christ (and of Stephen) could be ours too – a peace in the face of hardship and adversity.

Questions for Reflection:

1. Was Stephen a failed young deacon who were simply too eager and too zealous for faith? 司提反是否因對信仰過於狂熱執著而成為一個失敗的年輕執事？
2. How did God work through Stephen in face of persecution? How has God worked through you even in face of hardship? 神如何藉著 遭受迫害的司提反動工？甚至透過在困境中的你動工？
3. Stephen accepted his death with peace and compassion. What does that tell us about the Christian faith? Do you want such a faith? 司提反充滿憐憫和平安地接受死亡，在有關基督教的信仰上，它告訴我們了些什麼呢？你想擁有這樣的信仰嗎？
