Scriptures: Luke (路加福音) 4: 14-21

14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. 16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. 17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." 20Then he rolled up the scroll gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

    • in John (ch.2), Jesus was placed in a messy wedding;
    • in Mark (ch.1), Jesus demonstrated in power and authority by casting out an evil spirit;
    • in Matthew (ch.5), Jesus began by preaching for repentance;
    • in Luke (4: 14-21), Jesus taught in the synagogue of his home town Nazareth

  • Synagogues were places for Jewish prayer and worship. A town could establish a synagogue if there were at least ten men. Often, the OT scripture was read and discussed in the synagogue by the men who were present.

    猶太教堂是猶太人祈禱和崇拜的地方。如果一城市有10人以上,就可以建
    立一個猶太教堂。通常情況是,出席聚會的人都可在猶太教堂裏宣讀和討
    論舊約聖經。

  • There are significant differences between what Jesus read and what was written in Isaiah
    • the phrase ‘to bind up the broken-hearted’ was omitted
    • the second half of verse 2 in Isaiah 61 was cut out; it reads ‘[to proclaim] the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn’
  • 耶穌讀的和以賽亞所寫的有幾處顯著的不同
    • “醫好傷心的人”這句話被省略
    • 以賽亞書61章第二小節後半段被切斷 內容是[宣告]和我們 神報仇的日子,安慰一切悲哀的人。
  • These omissions contributed to the tension in that room, as Luke described, “the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him” (v.20)

  • Jesus proclaimed, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." (v.21)

  • What was left unsaid can be as important as what was said.

  • The focus of Jesus’ ministry is on the poor, the prisoners, the blind and the oppressed.

  • The ‘year of the Lord’s favor’ is a description of the year of Jubilee (Lev 25:10). The year of the total forgiveness of debt is now turned into a metaphor for salvation. Jesus had come to proclaim that God was ready to forgive sin totally.

    神悅納人的禧年在利未記25:10也有此形容。現在這 禧年”- 罪的寬恕
    已演變成救贖的隱喻。耶穌在這裡宣告,上帝願意完全原諒我們的罪。

  • To the broken-hearted and those who mourn, God comforts them not through promises of vengeance, but through the promise of ‘Jubilee’.
