Love, Never Runs Dry
Scriptures: John 2: 1-11
1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." 4"Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come." 5His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." 6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. 8Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, 9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." 11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.
Sermon Outline:
- The wedding in Cana was the occasion for Jesus to perform the first of eight miraculous signs recorded in the Gospel of John
- the identity of the newly wed was not clear – probably someone related to Jesus and Mary.
- In spite of all the preparation done by the family of the newly wed, ‘they have no more wine’ (v.3). Just like in ministry, in spite of all the preparation done by leaders of the church, they may run out of ‘wine’.
- ‘Wine’ is often associated with joy, celebration and festivity. It also represents covenantal blessing from God. Lack of wine in a wedding would be considered as an embarrassment, or even an offence to the guests.
- Using the concept of ‘kvetching’ (to endlessly whine or complain) to understand the dialogue between Jesus and his mother – Mary was complaining, Jesus was rude.
- What we as the church family say to each other is not as important to what we do for each other.
- Mary instructed the servants to “do what he tells you” (v.5). Jesus turned water into wine.
- The Greek word used for servant is ‘diakonos’ – a word used in the early church for ‘minister’, or ‘servant of God’
- Water from stone water jar, used for ceremonial washing, was turned into wine – turning unclean water into blessing.
- The size and number of the jars makes the miracle of water to wine even more extravagant – more than 150 gallons of wine!
- We, the servants of God in church, are called to do what Jesus instructs us to do – that is to love one another, to forgive one another, and to be gracious one another. If we find that in our best effort that our love runs dry, we can still turn to God and to trust that God can still turn all the dirty, ugly, and unclean stuff in us into something that is wonderful - into extravagant blessing for us and for others.
- In God, love never runs dry.
Questions for Reflection:
- When and where have your experienced ‘there is no more wine’?
- When and where have your experienced the extravagance of God’s love for you and for all creation?
- How might worship and serving of in church become opportunity for you to experience the abundance of God’s love that never runs dry?

Let this love be the sticky stuff that glues us together in this family of God - in bad times and in good times.
