World Day of Communion
Scripture Passage: Matthew 26: 17 - 35
17On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and
asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"
18He replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My
appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your
house.' " 19So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
20When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21And while
they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me."
22They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?"
23Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray
me. 24The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who
betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."
25Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?"
Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you."
26While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."
27Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it,
all of you. 28This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the
forgiveness of sins. 29I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until
that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."
30When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
31Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is
written:
" 'I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'
32But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
33Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will."
34"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you
will disown me three times."
35But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all
the other disciples said the same.
Sermon Outline:
Intro: Baptism and Holy Communion (also known as the Lord’s Table) are the two
sacraments of the Reformed Church. These two sacred rites were given to us by Lord
Jesus Christ himself. Baptism is an once-in-a-life-time event that initiates a person into
the Christian faith. Holy Communion is a recurring event that sustains faith in the midst
of sins and brokenness of the world, with the hope for the coming Kingdom of God.
Holy Communion serves 3 major functions:
1. To remember the past 紀念過去 – the death of our Lord 主的死
• We remember through taking the bread and wine that the Lord died for the
salvation of the world
•
•
The doctrine of transubstantiation 變質說 believes that the bread and
the wine are the actual body and blood of Christ. This thinking is greatly
influenced by Aristotle’s 亞里斯多德 philosophy
•
2. To unite the present 聯合現在 – with all the saints 所有的聖徒合而為一
• The doctrine of consubstantiation 同質說 by Martin Luther 馬丁路德
believes that Christ is present in the bread and wine.
• The doctrine of symbolism 象徵說 by Zwingli 慈運理 believes that bread
and wine is symbolic of the unity in Christ.
• Regardless of what we believe, we are united in Christ by taking the bread
and wine.
3. To hope for the future 盼望將來 – of the coming Christ 基督再來的時候
• The doctrine of memorial by faith 信心紀念 by Calvin 加爾文 believes that
Christ is present with us when we take the bread and wine
• The presence of Christ sustains and affirms our faith with the hope that
Christ is here and Christ will come again.
Conclusion: Let us celebrate the Holy Communion by remembering Jesus’ death
and resurrection, by being united with all saints in one heart and one mind, and
by hoping the glory of the coming Kingdom of God.
