Going Home 回家
Scriptures: Luke 2: 1-7
1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the
entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was
governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem
the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there
to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to
her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there
was no guest room available for them.

Sermon Outline:
Going home for the holiday is a tradition that is shared by both the Eastern and Western
culture. In this season of Advent, approaching Christmas, we as the church will also take
a metaphorical journey home. As we travel together, we will look closely at the story
of the birth of Jesus, from the perspective of home and family. Ultimately, we seek to
discern what God has planned for me and my family.
Bethlehem?
• they were returning to Joseph’s home town to register for census.
• feeling of joy and excitement in anticipation to meet other family members.
• feeling uncertainty of being rejected, as Mary was pledged to be married to
Joseph and was expecting a child.
• journeying home often is accompanied with a mix feeling of joy and fear
2. How would you define what ‘home’ is?
• A place – a physical location where we grow up
• A feeling – an environment where we find comfort and security
• A root – a place where an identity begins and flourishes
• The ultimate destination – a place of longing where we could truly belong
3. Who do we need to accompany us in this journey home?
• Just as Mary and Joseph had each other in their journey home, we will need
companions, such as family, friends or brothers and sisters in church.
• We will need Christ in this journey, just as Mary and Joseph had baby Jesus with
them.
Telling and retelling the story of Christmas is just like going home again.
As we journey together with Christ, we seek to answer the question: “What is home to
you?”
